Controlled Substance Electronic Prescription Submission Process
In order to send electronic prescriptions for controlled substances, the supplier must activate the EPCS service.

- Once activated, the provider will be able to send electronic prescriptions for controlled substances. (As required by the DEA, electronic prescriptions must be sent separately from prescriptions for non-controlled drugs).
- The Provider will follow the same procedure for sending electronic prescriptions.

- Go to the Medications screen.
- Press the New Rx button, located at the top of the screen.
- The following screen will be displayed:
- Proceed to search for the controlled medications.
- Once you have completed adding the controlled medications to the prescription, press the Save button located at the top of the screen.
- The New Prescription screen will be displayed, with the prescription created.
- Then, select the pharmacy to which you will send the electronic prescription (Note: In the list, the pharmacies that receive electronic prescriptions for controlled medications will be identified in the EPCS column. These will be identified with a green Checkmark).
- Another way to check if the pharmacy has the EPCS level of service is to click on the Info button in the Specialty column. In this list, Controlled Substances should appear
- Once you have selected the pharmacy, press the Sign eRx button located at the top of the screen (Note: The provider must have purchased the EPCS service for this button to be enabled).
- Controlled drugs, identified as (Schedule II), may not be prescribed with Refill.
- You must edit the prescription and press the Sign eRx button again.
- The Prescription Summary will be displayed (Note: Even if the provider does not have the Prescription Summary option selected in the General Settings screen, it is required for controlled medications).
- The provider must select the Ready to Sign checkbox for each of the controlled medications on the prescription.
- Otherwise, the following message will be displayed:
- Once you have selected the Ready to Sign box for each medication in the prescription, press the e-Sign & Send button located at the bottom of the screen.
- The following screen will be displayed. In it, the provider registers the password used to enter the EHRez application.
- Then, press the Continue button.
- The ID.me screen will be displayed, for the second authentication.
- Enter the e-mail address and password, which you used for this portal. Then press the Sign In button.
- The following screen will be displayed. Enter the code, which displays on your mobile device, if you have changed it, as it is constantly changing. Then press the Continue button.
- The following screen will be displayed:
- Press the Proceed anyway button.
- The prescription will automatically be sent to the pharmacy.
Handling of Controlled Medication Prescription Renewal, per Pharmacy request.
- The provider will receive a notice from the pharmacy requesting a refill of the controlled medication.
- It will be displayed in the notifications section.
- Press the Review button to review the recipe.
- The prescription sent by the pharmacy will be displayed for review.
The provider has two options:
- Cancel the renewal by pressing the Deny button located at the top of the screen.
- The following screen will be displayed:
- The provider must select a reason why he/she is denying the prescription refill (Note: This section is required).
- The provider may write a related note to deny the prescription refill (Note: This section is NOT required).
- Once you have completed the process, press the Send button.
- Automatically, the information will be sent to the pharmacy.
- Accept the prescription renewal by pressing the Replace button located at the top of the screen (The Replace button, for the purposes of electronic prescribing of controlled medications, denotes a new prescription).
- The recipe will be enabled for editing.
- The provider will be able to select the date on which he/she wishes the prescription to be filled in the Earliest Fill Date section.
- Change the supply days and renewal quantities, including the one that will be shipped.
- You can write a note to the pharmacy, in the Note to Pharmacy section.
- After editing the recipe, select the Ready to Sign checkbox.
- Press the Send button, located at the top of the screen.
- The following screen will be displayed. Here you will enter the password you use to connect to the EHRez application.
- Once you have entered the password, press the Continue button.
- The prescription will automatically be sent to the pharmacy.
